Our History

The Office of the Auditor General (OAG) of Puntland State, Somalia, has a storied history that reflects the region’s efforts to establish strong governance and accountability mechanisms. Here is a concise overview of its development and key milestones:

1998

The OAG was established following the formation of the Puntland State of Somalia. Its creation was part of the regional administration's efforts to ensure accountability and transparency in public finances and governance.

2000s

The early years were marked by challenges in capacity building and resource constraints. However, the office laid the groundwork for standardized auditing procedures and a code of conduct for financial management within government agencies.

2013

With the assistance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) through the Migration for Development in Africa (MIDA) program, the OAG improved its capacity. Key achievements included training senior management in international auditing standards, introducing International Standards of Supreme Audit Institutions (ISSAI), and enhancing the strategic plan for 2014-2018.

2018

Efforts to enhance digital auditing capabilities began, with a focus on implementing automated systems for data collection and analysis.

2020s

Recent reforms have focused on improving transparency, strengthening legal frameworks, and expanding the scope of audits. Collaboration with international organizations has helped modernize auditing practices and align them with international standards.

2024

The OAG continues to promote good governance through comprehensive audits and strategic partnerships. Its services now include financial, compliance, performance, forensic, and specialized audits, addressing key sectors like information systems and donor-funded projects.
